New Music Roundup (September 15th - September 19th)

1. Thundercat

The amazing Thundercat returns with his first original music in two years, “I Wish I Didn’t Waste Your Time” and “Children of the Baked Potato” (feat. Remi Wolf), out now via Brainfeeder. The tracks arrive just a month before he kicks off a tour of North America.

Thundercat fans can rejoice that they’re getting not one but two offerings from the big bad bassist, both of which feature input from the legendary Greg Kurstin. “I Wish I Didn’t Waste Your Time,” with its relaxed bassline and Thunder’s soft falsetto, taps into the classic Thundercat sound. The riffs, nimble and familiar, are easy to slip into, a welcome return to form from a master at his craft.

Meanwhile, “Children of the Baked Potato” invokes a more urgent energy, one where Thunder is matched by Remi Wolf’s commanding wails. The song’s title refers to the legendary hole-in-the-wall jazz club in LA, (which, you guessed it, exclusively serves baked potatoes), and which, for over 50 years, has showcased the best in LA’s jazz scene, fusion greats and studio icons. It is the place to see your favorite musician’s favorite musicians and was a massive influence on Thundercat.

“She’s [Remi] a child of the Baked Potato like me,” Thundercat says. “She knew exactly what the song needed. And it was wild to watch her make it happen. The more I listen to the song, it’s clear there was no one better I could have picked.”

“Children of the Baked Potato” premiered earlier today as part of a takeover of Shibuya TV’s massive outdoor screen in Tokyo’s bustling central district plus 42 outdoor screens in Miyashita Park, one of Tokyo’s buzziest urban hangouts with fans invited to experience it IRL. Thundercat and Remi Wolf also joined Zane Lowe for an interview on Apple Music’s New Music Daily show.

Although it’s been more than five years since his last full length, It Is What It Is, Thundercat keeps himself busy. Collaborations with Tame Impala, Gorillaz, Silk Sonic, Katraynada, and Justice maintained his presence in the music realm, while the bassist has also branched out into acting with roles in Star Wars: The Book of Boba Fett. Continuing his foray into the realm of television, the bassist joined Yo Gabba Gabba for a special performance at NPR’s Tiny Desk and appeared as a featured musical guest on the rebooted Yo Gabba Gabbaland Apple TV+. This past April, he appeared at the show’s Coachella set for both weekends. He’s stuck in your head, he’s playing in Gap ads, he’s onstage with Steve Lacy and Red Hot Chili Peppers — Thundercat’s warm, playful presence is never too far away, and life’s all the more enlivened by it.

2. OBN Jay – Me Against The World

It’s just him against the world, and Louisiana native OBN Jay is ready to prove why he’s built for it. With the release of Me Against The World, he delivers his most complete body of work to date, a two-disc project that captures his hunger, charisma, and rise. Available now via OBN Entertainment/MNRK Music Group, the album follows the release of his single “Break The Chains,” adding another layer of urgency and conviction to a rollout that’s only gaining momentum.

3. Meklit – Lefeqer Enegeza

Ahead of her upcoming album, A Piece of Infinity, out 9/26 via Smithsonian Folkways, Meklit, the Ethiopian-born, San Francisco–based vocalist, composer, and cultural strategist, today releases her third and final single, “Lefeqer Enegeza.”

Meklit said of the track: “I was so thrilled to work with the Ethiopian cultural icon, poet, and director Alemtsehay Wedajo as the lyricist for this song. She has written for so many Ethiopian legends, and I was so humbly honored that she was so open to working together with me. More of the world needs to know about her! Special thanks to Ellias Fullmore – aka Burntface – and Fatima Oliver, who appear as the couple in this video. For those of you who don’t know, Burntface is a trailblazer of Ethiopian hip-hop, and a longtime friend.”

7. Jabari – ULTRA

The Bel-Air star debuts with a silky rap-and-R&B combo on ULTRA, his highly anticipated first EP now available via Epic Records. Jabari, rising R&B artist and the BET and NAACP Award-nominated actor from Peacock’s hit drama Bel-Air, makes his formal musical introduction with a project that fully showcases his range as both an entertainer and storyteller. 8. Darius Martin – Nobody Like You

Rising R&B talent Darius Martin has officially released his highly anticipated new single “Nobody Like You,” out now via Nitram Music Group. The heartfelt track, produced by Grammy-winning hitmakers Cool & Dre alongside Edward Ross Collins, serves as the latest offering from Martin’s forthcoming project Sorry No More, which will be released on Tuesday, September 30th — Martin’s birthday with Cool & Dre also serving as the project’s executive producers. 11. Denzel Curry – HIM

Ahead of tomorrow’s nationwide premiere of Universal Pictures’ HIM, a terrifying original horror film directed by Justin Tipping and produced by Oscar winner Jordan Peele and his company Monkeypaw Productions, Loma Vista Recordings shares the final single and title track “HIM” by Denzel Curry from HIM – The Original Motion Picture Soundtrack. Arriving alongside an On The Radar performance ahead of the full soundtrack available everywhere tomorrow, the song follows previously released singles, “Blitz” by Jean Dawson, “Tip Toe” by Tierra Whack and “SWIM” by Guapdad 4000 featuring MAVI.

Both Tierra Whack and Guapdad 4000 also make their cinematic debuts in HIM, a chilling journey into the inner sanctum of fame and idolatry starring Marlon Wayans in an electrifying dramatic performance and Tyriq Withers, as well as Julia Fox, Tim Heidecker and Jim Jefferies. 

The horror film is anchored by the cinematic soundscapes of BAFTA Award-winning composer Bobby Krlic (aka The Haxan Cloak) and also features new music from Maxo Kream, LaRussell, Ovrkast., Larry June, Sampa The Great, Mike & Keys and more.

HIM director Tipping has created something unique in a horror film set in the world of professional sports. “Justin Tipping is an incredible visionary,” producer Jordan Peele says. “There is so much striking imagery in HIM that you will never see in another film, and to that, Justin and his team have added all these cinematic layers, from the music to the cinematography to the editing. He is a one-of-a-kind filmmaker, and this film is like nothing I have ever seen.” 

The music for HIM is no exception. With this film, Krlic delivers one of his boldest works yet: a score that shifts between wonder and unease, drawing from childhood fantasy and unsettling horror while pushing those contrasts through a contemporary lens. The score was recorded with a 50-piece orchestra composed of some of the world’s finest string players and features a haunting children’s choir. 

“Justin Tipping gave me the freedom to see how far I could bend the genre without losing the emotional thread,” Krlic says. “When Justin and I met, we clicked immediately. We’re the same age, grew up listening to a lot of the same music, and had the same reference points across film, art, food, everything. We were just singing from the same hymn sheet. It’s probably the most fun I’ve ever had writing music for anything.”

The HIM soundtrack is designed as a piece of work with its own gravity. 

“There’s a school of thought that says a score should be invisible, but I don’t necessarily believe that,” Krlic says. “A great score should know when to guide the audience, when to surprise them and when to announce itself. If the process is right, it can tell as much of the story as anything else on screen.”

Speaking about her cinematic debut, Tierra shares, “I’m truly grateful for the experience of being in my first film. With the support of director Justin Tipping, producer Jamal Watson, composer Bobby Krlic and the rest of the team, I learned so much about myself and the process. It made me even more excited to continue exploring film and TV in the future. Marlon Wayans was a big supporter for me on and off set, and Tyriq Withers and I have been hanging out and talking ever since we met! It is truly an honor to be involved in such a masterpiece.”

Speaking on his contribution, Jean shares, “Went to film school to learn “how to make movies” so I could score my own films, so when I received a call from the team that HIM wanted me to make an original record for the film I was excited. So I made Blitz which is the sound of adrenaline. There’s a line in one of my past songs, I don’t keep score, I keep scoring, feel that quote embodies everyone involved in HIM.”

Speaking on his involvement Guapdad 4000 shares: “It’s one thing to be in a movie for the first time, and it’s even crazier to make a song for the soundtrack of that movie, so to have the opportunity to do both is a blessing. Thank God, I’m HIM!”

Check out the smash new single, “PINK LEMONADE” from Billboard Magazine chart-topping rising singer-songwriter MARIAH DAWNE also known as MARIAH. (with a period) featuring The Colleagues. I began to consider how the senses can so closely align with passion, and “Pink Lemonade” came to life,” she shares. Riding high off a series of viral singles and his hit album Perfect Storm, Hurricane Wisdom is one of the most exciting rappers in Florida’s busy scene. Fresh off his performance during Kai Cenat’s Mafiathon stream, Hurricane shares his brand new single, “Powerhouse.” Debuted during the On The Radar segment of the stream, “Powerhouse” finds the 23-year-old rapper applying his talents to a ice cold Dxntemadeit instrumental, as he snakes his sinuous melodies around tuneful bass and ringing steel drums. In the video, Hurricane takes a break from touring in Dallas to enjoy the great outdoors, as he spends a day fishing before retreating to a mansion to relax. 

“Powerhouse” arrives ahead of Hurricane’s Perfect Storm: The Horizon, the young artist’s sequel to his February Perfect Storm mixtape. Black Soprano Family member ElCamino has announced his new and biggest project to date with MINO, which will be released on 10.2.25 via BSF Records.

In addition to the new project announcement, Camino released a new single and video for “Magic,” which features Boldy James & Double Dee.  “Magic” is now available at all DSP’s.

MINO will feature guest appearances from Benny The Butcher, French Montana, Boldy James, 38 Spesh, Inspectah Deck & Cory Gunz, among others.

Riverdale (PG County) rap-authority Olumide taps “All Talk” lyricist 3ohBlack for the Remix to his Dizzee Beats & Kiano-produced single “New Keys” via PGN Records / United Masters. Ahead of its official DSP release on September 30th, the accompanying music video was filmed by Machina Media and captures the pair trading high quality bars alongside choice eye candy as well as luxury vehicles.

In a press statement about the drop, the now Brooklyn resident reveals:

“The feedback I got on the initial launch of the song was some of the best I ever got. Folks from all sorts of backgrounds were loving it. I’m like alright, let’s push this further with a remix. I normally don’t even do remixes, but when I was thinking who would make sense 3ohBlack came to mind. He did exactly what I needed with his verse.”

17. Armani White – MOUNT PLEASANT.

21. Slick Rick ft. Idris Elba – Badman Generation

Today, hip-hop’s most revered master storyteller and record producer Slick Rick and award winning musician, actor and filmmaker Idris Elba have dropped their new collaborative track and music video “Badman Generation” directed by Meji Alabi. The record is a new bonus release track from Slick Rick’s recently debuted visual album project, VICTORY.

Hot on the heels of being named War Child’s newest ambassador and selling out a run of in-store shows across the UK, singer, songwriter, and cultural powerhouse Joy Crookes has released her breathtaking sophomore album Juniper.
