Shai Gilgeous-Alexander Gifts Teammates Rolexes After Winning MVP Award: “This Is What They Deserve”
Shai Gilgeous-Alexander is the NBA MVP this year, and he’s also up 2-0 in the Western Conference Finals against the Minnesota Timberwolves.
Neither of those accolades would be possible without his Oklahoma City Thunder teammates, and on Wednesday afternoon, he shared his appreciation with them along with some well-earned gifts.
Once the squad opened their gifts, they found Rolexes among the pricey items. They immediately tightened them around their wrists and flexed them on social media.
Shams Charania explained the depth of Gilgeous-Alexander’s gift, including that it was worth well over $10,000 and that everyone on the team, including those on two-way contracts, received one. Digging deeper into the gift bags also revealed iPhones, Beats by Dre headphones, and Canada Goose jackets that featured custom embroidered patches commemorating the team’s 68-14 record.
In his MVP press conference, Gilgeous-Alexander explained how a conversation with Jalen Williams helped him decide on wrist pieces to thank his teammates.
“He was like, ‘Two, what are you gonna get us when you win MVP?’ And it’s a crazy question to ask, but I don’t know what brought it up — watches were in the conversation. A lot of guys on the team like watches. Who doesn’t like watches?” he remembers. “And then I said yes — which was silly on my part. But as I got closer to achieving the goal, I was like, ‘Wait a second, I actually have to do what I said I was going to do.’ So I made it happen.”
He may have dropped a bag, but he knows how critical the team’s success was to the MVP honor, so he considers it a small token.
He continued, “But this is nothing compared to what they’ve been to me. I’d rather have the MVP over a Rolex every day of the week — and without them, I wouldn’t have the MVP. So this is, in the slightest, what they deserve.”
The Thunder are scheduled to play game three on the road against the Timberwolves in Minnesota on Saturday. The team is en route to its first finals appearance since 2012 and possibly its second championship in franchise history.
