Dr. Umar Ifatunde Johnson is no stranger to Cincinnati. As he made his way to the Lincoln Ware Show earlier today, the buzz surrounding his visit was already at a high. With a sold-out panel discussion at the Woodlawn Recreation Center set for late Thursday, it’s clear his messages (or meme-ery) resonate with the community.

School psychologist, author, and outspoken Pan-Africanist, Dr. Johnson has built a reputation as one of the leading voices in the fight for Black self-sufficiency and educational reform. At the core of his mission is the long-awaited Frederick Douglass Marcus Garvey Academy (FDMG)—a school designed to uplift and educate young Black kids through an Afrocentric curriculum.

During his interview with Lincoln, “King Kong Konsciousness” covered a range of pressing topics including the state of Black politics. The conversation then shifted to the impact of gangsta rap on Black youth and the unfair treatment of single mothers.

But the highlight of the discussion was his update on FDMG Academy. With so many supporters (and haters alike) eager to see the alleged school come to life, Dr. Johnson spoke very briefly about the challenges along the way. Despite the obstacles, the activist is committed to building a space where he believes Black children can thrive.

Whether you agree with him or not, one thing is certain— Dr. Umar Johnson is a force.
