Bishop Marvin L. Winans shared with his Perfecting Church congregation this past Sunday (July 21) that he had been diagnosed with bladder cancer.

His symptoms started around two years ago when light began to hurt his eyes and he noticed blood in his urine. Winans didn’t provide medical specifics, but said his doctor operated on him and then came back and told him he has bladder cancer. According to the National Cancer Institute, symptoms of bladder cancer can include blood in the urine, being unable to urinate, pain in the abdomen, bone pain, feeling tired and swelling in the feet.

He told church members he didn’t believe the doctor when he was told what needed to happen after his diagnosis. He underwent an immunotherapy treatment called Bacillus Calmette-Guerin (BCG) for a few weeks. Doctors did another round of tests and they found tumors inside of him.

Doctors then told Winans they will prescribe BCG for six more weeks this past May, but it’s up to him to decide what he wants to do after they run the recommended tests afterwards. They warned him it will get worse if it’s not treated. Winans went along with the treatment but said he’s counting on his faith and prayer to get him through.

“Understanding that doubt and faith cannot operate in the same spot,” he told his Perfecting Church congregation during his testimony yesterday. “Doubt is an enemy because every morning I get up, I tell God ‘Lord you are my healer.’ He said if you doubt, what you do is that you hold God in suspicion. What you do is that you’re hesitant to what God has said. All the Devil wants to do is give you reasonable doubt.”

This experience led him to be inspired musically. He crafted the song “Doubting Nothing” while waiting to be seen by the doctor the most recent time and when the doctors performed their tests, they did not see any tumors there. Bishop Marvin Winans said he’s now cancer free.

“The Enemy wants to make us afraid of our future,” he said. “You can tell all of the folks on YouTube trying to kill me off that I ain’t going nowhere.”
