Four Ways You Can Wear A Black Moto Jacket At Any Price Point

The other day, the social media stans (like myself) couldn’t help but obsess over Mama Tina Lawson taking Blue Ivy out, stuntin’ in this black moto jacket with a floral detail. She not only looked chic, but also made a case on why it’s very important to have a jacket like this in your wardrobe. I couldn’t get enough!

I’ve actually dibbled and dappled in black jackets myself, mostly because 1) black goes with everything, and 2) a leather (or faux leather) can go with EVERYTHING. It’s a wardrobe staple item that I personally feel is as important as the white-tee and your favorite pair of jeans. So how can you dress up a leather jacket, you may be asking. Well, here are a few of our favorite celebs and how they’ve rocked the look, plus some savvy alternatives to get you started. Consider this our faux-leather jacket how-to guide:

Pair it over a plaid dress and dark muted tones.

If you’re going out, say, with your friends on a Friday night, you can totally rock a moto jacket to add the finishing touches to a punk-rockish look, just like Kelly Rowland. The key here is to have just a bit of color contrast between your jacket and your “main” fit, like your dress. As you can see, Kelly dressed up the look by rocking an actual dress and some grunge heels, but this is not necessarily a super feminine piece and can be worn day or not.

Go for all-black. Always.

Tracee Ellis Ross makes a case for an all-black look: It’ll never steer you wrong. No, it’s not just a New York way of life, but it actually holds a ton of merit — an all-black look can be dressed up or down, but it always looks polished and chic. Like Tracee, you can go for a black jean, like this, and pair it with some black Dr. Martens, or even Converse. Of course, you’ll need a black tee to go with it, but you can always dress it up or down depending on your style. An open-cut jacket like this not only gives you that cool laid-back vibe, but also makes you look effortlessly put together.

Top it over a black lace dress for some added sex appeal.

Zendaya looked so racy and cool when she wore this leather jacket over a lacy dress with a thigh-high slit. The dichotomy of a super feminine piece paired with a very grunge-ish style is not only a thing Z can do, but you as well. Let’s say you’re heading to brunch, or a meeting with your team in the office. A wardrobe staple we’ve all come to love are rompers and jumpsuits, which easily can be romanticized or racy, short or long, classy or…well, whatever else you may be going for. A leather jacket is a cute way of adding a bit of flare to a jumpsuit, whether it’s muted or colorful, instead of a simple blazer. Plus, sometimes we need a bit of extra coverage up top. Sometimes.

Now, if you’re actually looking on where you can snag some enviable leather jackets this spring, here’s where you can start:

SPLURGE

This $4,980 Valentino rock-studded leather jacket is perfectly for a loose fit, though it’ll definitely hold since it’s a no-stretch leather. For an open-cut jacket more like Tracee’s, this $2,790 The Row jacket does have a stretch material but also features just a standard zip up the front (versus the average studding and buttons you’d see for a moto jacket). You can also take a deep dive into Theory’s peplum-detail blazer, which is perfect for throwing on any outfit and instantly elevating a look, or this mod-crinkled leather jacket also from the brand.

SPEND

If you do need a slightly less expensive alternative, this Madewell jacket is only $498 with the zip sleeve. You can also get this slim-fit from All Saints, which retails for $498 and goes up to a size 10. And lastly, turn heads in this sleek and elegant leather moto jacket for $200, which is not only beautifully tailored with an open-flap collar, but also a two-toned detailing down the arms.

If you’re going for a different color or just in need of something different, Guess’s moto jacket comes in more than just black (although, black is great) at a cost of about $110. Rock out with this Religion jacket, only $98, if you’re looking for a long-line cut and need a bit more room (with some added tassels for detailing). Another option is this Topshop jacket, which has a front-zip closure and the notched wing collar to match. To get a jacket similar to Ms. Lawson’s, you can go for this $67 faux-leather Bagatelle jacket with a notched collar and zip cuffs. Oh, and these badass flowers.

PLUS-SIZE

And if you’re in need of a fit with a bit more pull, this leather king jacket, made by none other than presumably the leather gods, Wilson Leather, will do you just right at right under $300. Target’s even got a sexy one for only $45 that you can snag for a quick look and outfit change. One of my favorites though is this black-embroidered faux-leather jacket from Torrid, which only is $80 and has a beautiful purple and pink floral design sketched in the back.
