One Florida teen is receiving harsh reprimands from the internet after a picture of his promposal goes viral.

Spectrum News 9 reports, that an 18-year-old student from Riverview High School made a promposal sign asking a girl out to prom using a racist phrase.

The sign read, “If I was black I’d be picking cotton, but I’m white so I’m picking U 4 prom?” The girl receiving the proposal allegedly responded with two heart face emojis.

Once posted on social media on April 22, the internet grew angry. The Sarasota school district released a statement on April 23 condemning the student’s actions.

“Neither the school district nor Riverview High School condones or supports the message conveyed in the post,” the statement read. “This incident remains an ongoing investigation and any disciplinary action and recommendation will be made accordingly.”

A robocall was also sent out to parents letting them about the incident. “We take the matter of race relations and school safety seriously, and we look forward to working with our students and outside groups to have a meaningful and informative dialogue,” according to the district statement.

Senior Erin Williams saw and reposted the image herself calling awareness to how common things like this happen.

“You think that this happens in other cities and states, but it’s like no, this is happening right in your hometown, in the school that you go to with the boy that you know,” explained Williams.

The student involved has since apologized via Snapchat and called his promposal a joke that went too far. He says that he didn’t mean to offend people. The school district is taking the next few days to decide a punishment for this horrific act.
