One of the voices that carried the legendary Temptations has passed away.

Dennis Edwards has died. Edwards replaced David Ruffin as the lead singer of The Temptations in the summer of 1968. In a nine-year period, Edwards lead voices help usher in a new era for the Tempts with his such as “Cloud Nine,” “I Can’t Get Next to You” and, “Papa Was a Rollin’ Stone.”

In 1984 Edwards got his first solo hit with “Don’t Look Any Further,” a duet with Siedah Garrett. The song and album from the same title rose to #2 on the Billboard R&B Charts.

Dennis Edwards was briefly married to Ruth Pointer of the Pointer Sisters. The couple has one daughter, Issa Pointer. Edwards was 74 years old. February 3rd would have been his 75th birthday.

I had the pleasure of meeting Dennis Edwards 3 times in my life and he was always very nice. He had a hell of a voice and good energy. He will be missed! My heart is a little heavy. Rest in power oh talented one.

  2. RIP, Dennis Edwards!
OMG, there is only one remaining original member of the Temptations still alive-Otis Willliams-with the deep bass voice.

    • You are wrong that was Melvin with that bass voice Otis was just a backup singing no singing voice on all the recording in the 50’s till now.

  3. I still can’t believe Mr. Edwards is gone..he was such a nice person to meet personally, and I was fortunate to meet him back in the early 90s. I will never ever forget that time ..and will always cherish you in my heart . A true and Great Human Being on stage and Off stage. I will missed you always Rest In Peace Mr. Dennis Edwards.

  4. Condolences to the Edwards family. Otis Williams may not have been the draw but without him there would have been nothing to draw to – – he put the group together and without him, there would not have been any Temptations.

Saw him sing at the 20 Grand often for free when they were just starting out along with all the other motown singers here in Detroit as a teenager, only 74 WOW. Boy, could he sing and excellent replacement for the great David Ruffin.

    • Like you, my first time seeing the Temps and many other young performers (for free) was at the 20 Grand. Dennis became the ‘voice’ of the Temps. I offer my prayers and condolences to his family and friends.
