Singer Bruno Mars has donated $1 million to Flint, Michigan to be used towards the water crisis relief.

This weekend while on stage at his concert in Auburn Hills, Michigan, Mars announced that he was donating the money to help the city and families affected.

In a statement to the Rolling Stone, Mars said, “I’m very thankful to the Michigan audience for joining me in supporting this cause. Ongoing challenges remain years later for Flint residents, and it’s important that we don’t forget our brothers and sisters affected by this disaster. As people, especially as Americans, we need to stand together to make sure something like this never happens in any community ever again.”

Back in 2014, Flint, Michigan experienced a major water crisis when the cities water supply was switched from the Detroit River to the Flint River in an attempt to save more money. As a result, water that the residents received became tainted and discolored with high amounts of harmful bacteria. This lead to an outbreak of  Legionnaire’s disease which affected 100 people and caused the death of 12.

Since then, five state officials have been charged with manslaughter in June.

CFGF president and CEO Isaiah M. Oliver was grateful to receive this blessing from Bruno Mars saying, “With a grateful heart, the Community Foundation of Greater Flint is honored to accept this inspiring donation. We know Bruno Mars’ $1 million gift will be transformative to the children and families of Flint. He understands the issues faced by Flint citizens, and we are touched by his concern and generosity.”
