Lupe Fiasco says he is done with the music industry after his new song “N.E.R.D.” was banned by music sharing service SoundCloud for being anti-Semitic.
The track, which samples J. Cole’s “Everybody Dies,” was taken down due to such controversial lyrics as: “Artists gettin’ robbed for their publishing by dirty Jewish execs that think his alms from the covenant.”
The lyric appears to reflect Lupe’s unhappy stint under veteran record exec Lyor Cohen at Atlantic Records. Cohen, who is Jewish, oversaw his music at the label for parent label WMG. According to DJ Z of DJbooth.net, “Fiasco dealt with creative control issues, album delays, and, clearly, he wasn’t thrilled about his publishing splits.”
Fiasco took his anger with SoundCloud to Twitter.
“Sooooo @SoundCloud took the NERD freestyle down because of ‘Hate Speech’??? I’m done,” he tweeted. “Getting beat up for telling the truth is not how I plan on spending the rest of life. I get the hint God. Yo Lupe fans it’s been fun and I hope you’ve had fun. I’m officially not releasing anymore music. Albums cancelled.”
