Dr. Regina Benjamin, the 18th US Surgeon General (2009-2013), talks to the Tom Joyner Morning Show about the importance of patients understanding their diagnosis in order to prevent  and manage health conditions.

“October is National Health Literacy Month. This is the degree in which individuals process all the health information. As a patient, you have a right to ask your physicians to speak in plain language. My request to say to you is, if you don’t understand something…you didn’t go to medical school for 12 years. Ask your clinicians to speak in plain language,” Dr. Benjamin said.
