The legendary Norman Leer is the executive producer of the five-part docu-series America Divided along with Shonda Rimes and Common. He talks about the Tom Joyner Morning Show about the series that’s currently airing Friday nights on EPIX throughout October.

On teaming up with Shonda Rhimes:

“That was wonderful. It was about the many divisions in American life. I was dealing with housing in New York city. It was a terrible situation.”

On how influential his career has been:

“When Russell Simmons said that as he watched The Jeffersons as a boy, he saw George Jefferson write a check. And he at nine years old had never seen a black man right a check. It’s thrilling.”
