It’s hard to believe that it’s only been a few months since Michael Strahan’s controversial exit from Live! because so much drama has happened since then. There was Kelly Ripa’s initial reaction, which included her taking some days off from her hosting gig and being livid over being blindsided, Strahan quickly accepting a new job with Good Morning America and the quest for a new permanent host that has yet to be filled. Throw in some interviews from both former co-workers and it’s been a pretty rocky summer.

Michael Strahan is the latest cover story for People magazine and in it he gives all the details about leaving his position at Live!, loving his new position at Good Morning America and where his relationship with Kelly Ripa stands today.

E! Online has all the specifics of the in-depth interview.

On Kelly Ripa: After the noticeable onscreen tension once he announced his exit, Strahan left Live! early at executives’ request. “I wasn’t surprised by her reaction at all, but I can’t control somebody else’s actions,” Strahan confesses. “I was there four years, and it’s about more than just being in front of the camera.”

Regarding the fallout from his exit, the former NFL player confesses, “The most disappointing thing to me was that I was painted as the bad guy, because I value the way I carry myself. I don’t want people to see me as ‘Oh, he just ran out, just left them there.’ That’s just not true.”

Even now, Strahan isn’t sure what to make of his relationship with Ripa.

“At one point I think we were friends. I don’t know what happened at the end,” he says. “I learned a lot from her, though.”

Toward the end, he says, they “didn’t really communicate” as much as they once had. “I kinda looked at it like, ‘It was what it was,’” he explains. “I come from a business where you have to collaborate. The show was going well? We’re all winning. That’s all that matters to me.”

To read the full cover on Michael Strahan, you can pick up the latest issue of People magazine on newsstands Friday. Surely both Strahan and Ripa will be fine in their current roles, now that their friendship is over they can hopefully move on.

  1. Maybe he was told by his bosses not to say anything, but the questions is if that were the case, why haven’t they defended his silence? And why was Kelly allowed to throw the tantrum and not come to work? That wouldn’t fly at my office…

  2. The network handled it bad, not Strachan. If your boss told you to stay tight lip on something, what would you do? Stay tight lip. If Kelly was in the same predicament, she would have done the same thing. She wasn’t going to mess up hey livelihood for Strachan. She is the one that handled it unprofessionally by staying home for a few days. Like a brat catching a temper tantrum. If she was his friend, she should have congratulated him and took up any grievances with the network. I personally think she was envious of Strahan’s move and was angry the network didn’t ask her.

  3. clearly michael is heart broken about his relationship with kelly ended the way it did. Kelly thought highly of Michael and felt he would add so much to the show. Kelly embraced diversity without fear because she felt Michael was perfect to co/host with her.
Michael try a sincere apology. Sometimes that helps your pain. It appears Kelly has moved on because she had to.

    • Please you sound as if your making him the bad guy too.Look this was a business career decision.Micheal doesn’t owe her anything.I for one would’ve maybe told her.Im moving on to another job. But,In Hollywood I guess you have to play that game. And the friend deal please! That should’ve been a cordial friendly working relationship.I doubt it was a true blue friendship please!Too much emotion attached to it for me.That is from Kelly end not many men do the emotional thing.Kelly is a brat plain and simple.

  4. All the best to Michael and Kelly. I watch Michael at 7am and Kelly at 9am, they both look happy now. Michael did not need to give Kelly any heads up. Move on people.

  5. he is not the network nor in charge, he didn’t owe her ANYTHING, so if I get up from this library job and retire move on what ever I, decide to do? I DON’T OWE NOBODY AT THIS LIBRARY ANY EXPLANATION OF MY DEPARTURE BYE FELICIA AND BOY BYE!!!!!! Now the network, maybe they could have handled the departure differently, but in actuality he is not the boss, he goes where the money is for him and his 4 children, so he has to confer or ask kelly is it ok? you go to work to get a pay check not to make friends and dont’t get me wrong I’m a fan of kelly’s before LIVE! all my children was my shit!!! loved hailey, much love also to her and her guy love them together 🙂 but mike owes her nothing, they weren’t friends before that and dont have to be now, are her and regis BFF? i don’t think so.its a business SHOW BUSINESS.

  6. I don’t think he handled his departure professionally. To have your team member and friend/employer find out you’re leaving a successful television show from an announcement made to the public was disrespectful and not loyal to their friendship. Hopefully he recognizes the platform that Live with Kelly and Michael provided him to help skyrocket his television career. Wish him good luck and success on his venture with GMA.

I do think it was a little tasteless how he left. I working together for 4 years you do usually form some sort of relationship. I just think it could have been handled better. Best to both.
