Donald Trump, the presumptive Republican presidential nominee, is fond of bragging about his great relationship with African-Americans, well, you know, “The Blacks.”
Who could forget how he pointed out his “African-American over here” in June while speaking about a Black supporter in Phoenix, Arizona.
And don’t forget his April 2011 comment “I have a great relationship with the Blacks,” according to NBC News. “I’ve always had a great relationship with the Blacks.”
But now that it’s time to put some action behind those words, he’s unavailable. He has declined to speak next week at the NAACP convention in Cincinnati, Ohio, which comes at the same time as the GOP convention in Cleveland, according to NBC News.
Meanwhile, his Democratic rival Hillary Clinton will have the stage to herself, the report says:
The civil rights organization has a long tradition of inviting nominees from both major parties to speak at its convention during election years, although some appearances have been rockier than others.
Mitt Romney in 2012 was booed after he told the crowd that he would “make things better in the African-American community” than incumbent President Barack Obama had done.
The theme of this year’s NAACP convention will be “Our Lives Matter, Our Votes Count.”
“We look forward to hearing Secretary Clinton’s priorities and plan to advance our issues of social justice,” NAACP President and CEO Cornell William Brooks said in a statement Monday, adding that issues such as police accountability and economic and educational equality will be cornerstones of this election.
Trump needs to put his money where his mouth is. He has a private jet. How difficult would it be for him to fly over to Cincinnati from Cleveland to attend the NAACP convention? Sound off in the comments.
