You may have someone in your own family struggling with addiction.
It’s even become an issue on the campaign trail.
Bernie Sanders – “We are looking today at a very, very severe crisis in this country regarding opiate addiction and heroin addiction.”
Hillary Clinton – “I know Kentucky’s facing a big opioid crisis. And we’ve got to do more because we’re losing thousands of people a year to overdoses.”
Republicans in the House vote this week on 18 bills to address America’s problem with pain pills.
But how did we get here?
Dr. David Kessler, the former head of the FDA, tells CBS News this.
Dr. David Kessler -“This is an American condition. This is an American disease.”
So who does Dr. Kessler blame?
Dr. David Kessler – “FDA has responsibility. The pharmaceutical companies have responsibility. Physicians have responsibility. We didn’t see these drugs for what they truly are.”
And lawmakers certainly have a responsibility too.
This week, the House is scheduled to vote on 18 bills to combat this addition.
The question is though, is that even enough?
