Swing Phi Swing, a social fellowship founded in 1969, is celebrating its 47th anniversary today. The organization promotes strong values such as academic excellence, community service, community engagement, and social change.
On the campus of North Carolina’s Winston-Salem State University, 12 women came together to form the organization on the one-year anniversary of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s assassination. The women were supported by Groove Phi Groove, their brother social fellowship organization.
Jeanette Butler, Anita Chase (Watson), Beverly Dorn (Steele), Finesia Dunovant (Walker), Jane Harris, Rosalind Marshall, Marilyn Reid, Patricia Story, Ellen Tomlinson (Carter), Brenda Travers (Satterfield), and Lorraine Watkins (Phillips) founded the organization.
Not unlike Black Greek Lettered Organizations, Swing Phi Swing began attracting droves of women to its positive cause across all levels of class, religious background and place of birth. Today, the organization boasts over 10,000 members across dozens of graduate and undergraduate chapters at colleges and universities nationwide.
The “Swing” in Swing Phi Swing is also an acronym: Supporting Women In Need of Growth, which serves as a main purpose of Swing Phi Swing. It also has partnered in the past with like-minded groups such as the National Council of Negro Women.
Dr. Leone Lettsome is the eighth and current president of Swing Phi Swing, and her office oversees over 50 chapter houses.
