The former Mayor of Detroit Kwame Kilpatrick spoke out from prison on the Flint, Michigan water issue. He made his comments in a letter posted by local news station WKYZ.  The larger question is if there was actual knowledge this water was contaminated before distribution began as his letter seems to insinuate, who will black America demand to be punished?

From Kilpatrick:

FYI Just so you all know. We (The Detroit Water and Sewage Department) were talking about the problems of the Flint Water Department (financial management, ability to perform, cleanliness of water, elimination of contaminants, mercury levels, lead levels) back in 2004. We knew (our folks in Detroit, SEMCOG, Genesee County Officials, some members of the State Legislature, and the Governor at that time) new that there were significant issues with all of those items.

In 2006 we attempted to craft a deal to put them on our water system. We were in negotiations, led by Victor Mercado, for months, and I wanted to make it work. I attended one meeting, and was on a conference call for another, expressing my willingness to make this work. SEMCOG and Judge Fiekens was also aware of this. SEMCOG was against the Agreement!

BUT, the people in Genesee County, at the table during that time (the County Drain Commissioner & his staff, a State Senator, and a State House Member all from Genesee County) wanted to keep control of the system.

Also, former Michigan Governor, Jennifer Granholm, was well aware of the issues with the Flint Water Department, and their inability to produce contaminant free water moving forward, nor afford the equipment & technology to do so.

When the current Governor of Michigan says that he “only recently was made aware of this issue”, he is being misleading at best. But more than likely, he is being viciously, aggressively, and deliberately untruthful. I pray that the truth comes out. That’s what everyone in Michigan wants right? The Truth! Well, my prayer is that you all will have an opportunity to warm yourselves at the fire of Truth.

I am here in prison, with a 28-year sentence, for a case where there is NO EMBEZZLEMENT, NO MISUSE OF PUBLIC FUNDS, NO BRIBERY, NO STEALING OF ANY MONEY, as a matter of fact, NO PUBLIC MONEY AT ALL. And NO CHARGES THEREOF! 99% of Detroiters have NO idea why I’m here. They don’t know the charges, nor what I’m sentenced for. They sure do know the rumors.

I wonder how much time you get for knowingly & actually delivering unsafe, dangerous, and poisonous drinking water to the people you represent? Which in-turn causes deaths, permanent illnesses, and disabilities. Can you actually be hated, hurt, and imprisoned for ridiculous rumors about murder…and not be for actually killing people?

I pray for justice for the people of Flint! And I also pray that God will give to all of you in Michigan the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of Him. That you all may have your eyes opened with understanding.
The blindness is hurting lots of people. Its even killing some. OPEN YOUR EYES! KMK”

Sad but true. He was all about THAT life. When he had an opportunity to shine and do right by his people, he chose differently and as already stated, people in Detroit are still suffering from the results.

My grandfather moved to Detroit in the 50’s after being in the Armed Services to work for Ford Motor Company. He said when Kwame Kilpatrick got elected that he was a crook. I was surprised that he felt this way, he being a old black man and a new black man had be elected to run one of the biggest cities in the USA. In his words ” That boy ain’t $hit” and he is going to ruin Detroit” I guess he knew what he was talking about. Remember he was the HIP HOP Mayor.. And look where is at now. “THUG LIFE”…

  3. This is one of the reasons why black stay in the shape they’re in. Tell me…why in the hell, with all these professional black folk walking around and FREELY able to answer questions….why are you going to go to a prison and interview an ex – mayor who’s presently an inmate. There’s proof right there that he doesn’t know what he’s doing or saying. If he did…his azz wouldn’t be in the pen. Smgdh…….

This us what you call a REAL SNITCH B*!CH! That’s why he’s where he is, you mean to tell me He knew and did not Speak on the behalf of His People, Oh wait we found out exactly where his priorities were, at this point he’s no better than the other players in this horrible ordeal, as a matter of fact he should have kept his mouth shut, this only confirms his ineffective leadership, SMH-SEX over THE PEOPLE!

  5. So where is the piece of shit incompetent current mayor of Flint because I know memos dealing with water quality passed their desk, just like Kwame in Detroit Rham in Chicago

I know you’re not supposed to shoot the messenger, he’s just bringing the message (although we’ve all figured out the Governor is a big a$$ liar all on our own). But when the messenger is dirty and behind bars for doopin’ the people he swore to protect, honor and make their lives better, it’s hard to even consider “his truth”. Sit back, serve your time on the tax payers’ dollars…you’re dismissed.
Why is it so hard for people in power to do the right thing?

I dont want to hear shit from Kwame Kilpatrick about JACK SHIT, the citizens of detroit over the years paid out something like $50 million in legal fees & verdicts for the dumb shit this bitch pulled while in a position of power, so if anything he should be revealing why he looked the other way at the time when he witnessed decisions being made that could be detrimental to the health of the neighboring citizens, answer is simple he was way to busy doing crooked shit himself

  9. Everyone knows that the POS governor Snyder has been lying regarding this issue.

If it had been up to him and others in Michigan gov’t–the story of the polluted water never would have been leaked to the media and folks would’ve continued getting sick from drinking the it.

Kudo’s to the woman who EXPOSED this mess!!!!!!! —-they attempted to silence her voice also.
