Tracy Morgan has a lot to be thankful for. And he is not shy about expressing how fortunate he is to still be around after surviving a devastating car accident in June 2014 in New Jersey.

Despite Morgan coming out of it alive, his friend and fellow comedian James McNair was not as fortunate as the incident claimed his life.

As one of Barbara Walters’ “10 Most Fascinating People of 2015,” Morgan reflected on the reason he was spared while citing his daughter.

“What do you think the reason is that you survived and your friend did not?” Walters asked Morgan.

“Who knows,” Morgan replied during an interview that aired Thursday (Dec. 17) during the annual “10 Most Fascinating People” special on ABC. “Maybe He kept me here to raise my daughter, to raise my family. My new wife.”

In addition to his daughter, The Wrap reports that Morgan acknowledged his then-fiancée Megan Wollover and the effect the accident had on her.

“Lord knows what it must have been [like] for her to get that phone call at 6 in the morning about her fiancé and the father of her child,” Morgan stated about Wollover, who became his wife in August. “Lord knows what she went through. And one day she came all the way back to our house to get some fresh clothes, and the phone rang and the nurse said he’s up, and he asked for you.”
