Kevin Powell‘s new memoir, The Education of Kevin Powell: A Boy’s Journey Into Manhood talks about being raised by his single mother and how her dreams for his survival and success helped him become the first in his family to attend a university. It was there where he became a student leader and an expert in social injustice.

“I was an A-student but I got in a lot of fights and I kicked out of school a lot. This is why fathers are important….I simply didn’t have that.”

What he would tell his younger self:

“I think we have to affirm our children. Our children are constantly under attack.”
