Residents from Lyndhurst, New Jersey were appalled to find recruitment letters from the Ku Klux Klan sprawled throughout their small town last weekend, the New York Daily News reports.

Placed in a sandwich bag with a rock serving as paperweight, the pamphlets were discovered all over lawns and driveways asking participants to “Join the Klan and Save our Nation.” The pamphlets included a number connected to the hate group’s White Knights center in North Carolina.

The town, made up of diverse people, was shocked to even see the flyers in New Jersey.

The New York Daily News reports:

There were five complaints about the hate group’s recruitment tactic, police said. One neighbor collected all the flyers he could find and threw them out, his brother, Joe Cook, told the Daily News. Cook said he was shocked that the hate group was so open about its actions, going as far as providing a website link and a phone number on people’s doorsteps. He said his brother walked up and down his block and collected a few dozen of the pamphlets to throw out.

NAACP president of Bergen County, Anthony Cureton, condemned the KKK’s actions. Police advised residents not to give the group attention and to merely throw the flyers in the trash.

The Record reports that 75 to 100 flyers of the same design were also left in Rutherford, NJ in December.

Cureton believes the flyers were not passed out by residents, but by outsiders connected to the Klan.
