An Alabama journalist reportedly set fire to her own vehicle while she was still inside after a fight with her husband, The New York Daily News reports.

The incident happened last month on Natalie Pierre Williams’ 26th birthday. The senior sports reporter for AL.com got into an argument with her husband, Chasten Leigh Williams, while driving in a dark wooded area around 2:30 a.m. in Birmingham, Ala.

The couple’s car then veered off the road and crashed into a tree. Williams pulled his wife from the driver’s side of the car, but walked away because of their argument.

When he returned, the car was in flames. Williams sustained third-degree burns on 75 percent of her body. Police discovered Wednesday that Williams was the one who caused the fire.

The New York Daily News reports:

Surveillance video from a nearby convenience store shows Williams buying a gallon of gasoline, a two-gallon gas container and a wand-style lighter moments before the fire was discovered.

The melted items were found in or around her vehicle after the fiery wreck, authorities said.

Williams is still in critical care and has had multiple surgeries since the incident. No criminal charges have been filed. Police Capt. Gregg Rector says he hopes to find out the reason Williams decided to light herself and the car on fire.

AL.com reports:

“We still don’t know exactly what prompted her actions that night but it appears there were a lot of emotions involved and sometimes actions and decisions are not responsible during those type moments,” Police Capt. Gregg Rector told AL.com.

Her friends are currently taking donations on a GoFundMe crowdfunding site to help cover her medical bills.
