The family of a Texas teen who was detained last week after staff at his high school mistook his homemade clock for a bomb, has removed him from the school, according to The Dallas Morning News.
The father of 14-year-old Ahmed Mohamed told the newspaper that he withdrew his son from the Irving Independent School District, saying that he was also pulling out his two other children.
“Ahmed said, ‘I don’t want to go to MacArthur [High School in Irving, Texas],’” the child’s father, Mohamed Elhassan Mohamed, told the Morning News. “These kids aren’t going to be happy there.”
Ahmed became a social media star last week after a photo went viral of him being led away from school in handcuffs. The ninth-grader was decked out in a NASA T-shirt.
He and his family received an outpouring of support in what was perceived to be the latest example of Islamophobia in the nation after the September 11 terrorist attacks. The young teen was accused of making a hoax bomb, and received a three-day suspension over the clock he made to impress his new classmates and teachers, reports say.
After he was detained, he received scores of invitations, including an offer to visit the White House from President Barack Obama, and an invite to the Google Science Fair.
