WASHINGTON (AP) — Hillary Rodham Clinton apologized Tuesday for her use of a private email account after declining since last week to express remorse for the State Department arrangement that has shaken her presidential campaign.

Asked about setting up the private email account by ABC News, Clinton said: “That was a mistake. I’m sorry about that. I take responsibility, and I’m trying to be as transparent as I possibly can.”

The Democratic presidential candidate declined to apologize for using a private email system when asked directly by NBC News on Friday, saying she was “sorry that this has been confusing to people.” In an interview with The Associated Press on Monday, she said an apology wasn’t necessary because what she did was “allowed” by the State Department.

Even as she said she was sorry Tuesday, a new sign surfaced indicating the issue is likely to stick around. Two powerful Senate chairman said they are considering seeking one or more immunity orders for Bryan Pagliano, a former Clinton aide whose attorneys have indicated would refuse to answer questions under his Fifth Amendment right to protect himself against any prosecution. Pagliano was paid to maintain Clinton’s personal server while she was secretary of state.

Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley and Homeland Security and Government Affairs Committee Chairman Ron Johnson — both Republicans — wrote to Pagliano that they are considering seeking the immunity in an effort to compel Pagliano to testify, while ostensibly protecting him from any prosecution. The committees’ oversight function is unrelated to any potential prosecution, they wrote. The chairmen asked for a meeting with Pagliano’s attorneys to assess what might be revealed in such testimony.

For her part, Clinton told ABC News that she feels it was a mistake to use her private e-mail account and acknowledged that she could have handled the resulting inquiries more effectively.

“I do think I could have and should have done a better job answering questions earlier. I really didn’t perhaps appreciate the need to do that,” she said.

She reiterated her apology in a late-night note to voters on Facebook.

Clinton’s support in the early Democratic contests has declined against a rival, Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders, as she has sought to address questions about her use of a private email server while serving as President Barack Obama’s secretary of state. She turned over about 55,000 pages of emails to the State Department that she sent and received using a homebrew server set up at her New York home.

In her interview with the AP, Clinton said it would have been a “better choice” for her to use separate email accounts for her personal and public business during her time at the State Department. She also said the issue has not damaged her campaign but has been a “distraction, certainly.”

“But it hasn’t in any way affected the plan for our campaign, the efforts we’re making to organize here in Iowa and elsewhere in the country,” Clinton told the AP. “And I still feel very confident about the organization and the message that my campaign is putting out.”

Republican National Committee spokeswoman Allison Moore said the “only thing Hillary Clinton regrets is that she got caught and is dropping in the polls,” adding that Clinton’s “reckless attempt to skirt government transparency laws put our national security at risk.”

First, George Bush used “Willie Horton” to bring down Michael Dukakis. Then it was “The Swift Boat” lies against John Kerry. Now, it’s the Emails with Hillary Clinton.
The Republican party is well known for creating the biggest scandals out of nothing to create mass hysteria to the public. Does it mean Hillary should have known better? Of course, but the biggest threat to this country is not Hillary, not secrets, No the biggest threat is to our democracy when we spend hundreds of millions of dollars to spread propaganda and create a non existent scandal. And the media, not just Fox but CNN, MSNBC and everybody else included. I guess they will give that skinny bird like woman named Andrea Mitchell a Pulitzer prize for her interview! What a load of dung. And so many people fall for it. We are worse than “The Stepford Wives” There will always be some issue or some thing the GOP will trump up to unbelievable proportions to throw the American people off and divert them from real issues. The people who are uneducated are the ones who stay up at night listening to this stuff and believing every word of it. If they could peel themselves away from it and took a hard look at the landscape of the country they would see the real scandal is hunger, broken bridges, dilapidated school conditions, unemployment in our inner cities, police reform, climate change, immigration reform, gun violence, college affordable education, the list goes on.
It’s like the old Marvin Gaye song “I heard it thru the grapevine where he says Believe half of what you see and NONE of what you hear.

People who say this is about nothing clearly don’t understand the meaning of things like TOP SECRET which is a level of security clearance that requires $50k+ of background investigations to achieve, she broke laws & rules that could possibly put extremely sensitive information & lives at risk, would you go on a bootleg looking website & disclose all of your personal information SSN, address, financials etc etc?? .. well what she did could have FAR WORSE consequences in terms of getting people killed & disclosing information that’s essential to national security … please educate yourselves

  3. This was about a lot to do, about nothing. I could care less if Hillary had a private email account or not. Whoever made this into such a big waste of money, should be a shame of themselves. There are so many issues that are more important than this. As far as I am concern Hillary had nothing to apologize for. Let’s get to the real issues, jobs, police conduct, discrimination and so so much more.
