Dear Tom,

My mom is the 2nd youngest of 5 children.  She was born and raised in Dallas and graduated from Prairie View A&M with a Masters in education.  She has been an educator in Dallas for over 30 years and is currently in charge of the cluster program at skyline high – the first high school in the United States to offer a magnet school curriculum.  She had 4,697 students last year.

Ever since I was born, my mom has made sure I haven’t gone without despite hard times. There has always a roof over my head, clothes on my back, and food on the table. Not a day goes by that I don’t see her strength and faith.

Her mother passed away in 1998…it affected her deeply, but she had no time to mourn because she was expecting me one month later.  Then in 2004, she lost her father.

Three years ago, her older sister suffered a stroke on both sides of her brain that almost left her lifeless. My mom stepped in and took care of her, going back & fourth to the doctor, rehab, therapy and church.  Right now, my aunt is recovering well although she can’t hear, but my mom says she saw her dancing the other day.

It’s a new school year for both of us – I am a senior in high school and will be going away to college next year.  Being a single mom isn’t easy and she never goes out for fun because of me, work or my aunt.  I do know that she enjoys going to spa castle.
