Talk about #BlackGirlMagic.
With an ongoing conversation about justice, race, and diversity dominating media in recent months, it’s only right that some of the largest magazines in the nation are celebrating Black women in a big way.
Kerry Washington was the latest star to cover Self, showing off her Pilates moves and speaking out on the importance of a balanced life. After the birth of her child, the Scandal actress went back to the strict workout routine she’s kept for the past five years.
“I have to take care of myself in order to live life the way I want to,” she says. “It’s important to have rest days. But in the long run, if I don’t work out for, like, three days, I feel worse, not better.”
Ms. Pope isn’t the only one sprinkling Black girl magic across America. Serena Williams, Misty Copeland, Beyonce, Queen Latifah, Amandla Stenberg, and Willow Smith have graced magazine covers this fall fashion season. It’s far cry from last year’s magazine covers that only featured a few women of color like Viola Davis, Rihanna, and Zoe Saldana.
Check out the covers below and let us know which ones you’ll be picking up!
Queen Latifah for Variety
The accomplished singer and actress will star in the NBC remake of The Wiz.
Misty Copeland for Essence
Copeland became the first African-American woman to be named a principal ballerina in the 75-year history of American Ballet Theater. She will also make her debut on Broadway Aug. 25 in On the Town.
Willow Smith for i-D
The singer debuted her new sound on the project FQ-C#7 and released a New Age-inspired video, “Wit A Indigo.”
Serena Williams for The New Yorker (Fashion Issue)
The athlete broke records with her sixth Wimbledon title back in July. Currently, she’s gearing up for the upcoming U.S. Open.
Amandla Stenberg for Dazed
Amandla is beloved by teens for her bold views on culture appropriation and fearless approach to racism in Hollyweird.
Beyonce for Vogue
Bey is the first African-American to grace the cover of the magazine’s much-desired September issue.
Ciara for Shape
Ciara shares her diet secrets, talks loving motherhood, and more. The singer came back to the tour life for the first time in six years in early 2015.
