SANDUSKY, Ohio (AP) — A man who entered a restricted area at Ohio’s Cedar Point amusement park to look for a lost cellphone has been struck by a roller coaster and killed.

Police say James A. Young had just finished riding the Raptor on Thursday and jumped over a fence to retrieve something he dropped during the 57 mph ride. The Erie County coroner says it was his cellphone.

Sandusky police say Young was struck by the ride or someone on it. No one else was hurt.

The amusement park sits along Lake Erie in Sandusky and has billed itself as the best in the world.

The park confirms the death in a statement saying “a guest entered a restricted, fenced area of Raptor and was struck by the ride.” It says its “thoughts and prayers go out to the family.”

If you have ever stood in line waiting for the next ride on the rollercoaster, then you have felt the breeze, along with the ferocious thunder of when those cars enter the loading area. WHhhooosh!!!
I always have a tender ( as most do) to move back before going forward.
    That was only his fault.

How sad, he could have talked to the ride operated and let him know he lost his cell phone. Gosh what a senseless death.

  3. Unless he was on the tracks, how is that possible? Guess they can’t release too many details but that wasn’t a smart move for him to enter a restricted area at all. Sad and senseless.

    • I’m thinking the only way he could have got hit by the roller coaster, is when it came by him, the seat-cart of the coaster sticks out from under the wheels and the track. the way that mirrors stick out more than the car body, those mirrors can hit you as the car speeds ahead. I’m guessing cause I don’t get it either.
