Actor/dancer/choreographer Darrin Henson obviously wears many hats and one of them is working to increase HIV/AIDS awareness. In Indianapolis today, Henson will be the keynote speaker for the 11th Annual Statewide HIV Awareness Program.
Earlier this year, it was revealed that Scott County, Indiana is currently dealing with one of the worst HIV outbreaks since the discovery of the disease.
“It’s really important to make sure my status stays negative. I’m here to talk to these young people about how to stay negative. It is really spreading out here. A lot of young people don’t listen to their family members or teachers,” Henson said.
“But because of their love for the big screen and the small screen and acting, a lot of times we’re able to get into their head and talk to them because they focus on us and what we have to say. So I like to use my face and my voice for good, because they really don’t get it. We’re trying to wake them up today.”
Henson is also involved in Chocolate City, a black stripper film that opens May 22, a month before Magic Mike XXL, the big-budget stripper franchise movie starring Channing Tatum, Joe Mangiello and Jada Pinkett Smith. Henson’s movie stars himself, Ginuwine, Robert Ri’chard, Tyson Beckford and Michael Jai White.
“We are taking it off. There’s a lot of making it rain in Chocolate City,” says Henson. “It’s about this young dancer who comes in on amateur night in this club. There’s a lot of chocolate in chocolate city and everybody loves chocolate.”
