Trevor Noah’s present and future may revolve around comedy, but according to reports, the funnyman’s situation with his stepfather was very serious.

Noah’s grandmother, Nomalizo Noah, recalled how tragedy occurred for the next host of “The Daily Show,” who was 25 when his mother Patricia Noah was shot by his abusive stepfather Abel Shingange. After the shooting, Nomalizo Noah told the Daily Mail that “Abel went around with a gun trying to find Trevor, but Trevor was always here, there and everywhere, performing on stage, you never knew where he was.

“So when Patricia’s husband began to hunt him he couldn’t find him.”

The Daily Mail noted that Patricia Noah suffered abuse from Shingange, who hit her with a bicycle frame and chased her down the street. The abuse was so bad that in 2003, Patricia Noah moved into a shack in the backyard to get away from her husband.

During this time, the site mentioned that Noah hardly visited his mother “because he could not stand to see her like that.” Patricia Noah eventually got out of the abusive relationship and remarried. Shingange’s violent attack on Patricia Noah stemmed from her new marriage.

Despite being a hunted man, Noah made sure his mother was taken care of by keeping up a vigil beside her and paying for her stay in a hospital under a different name so Shingange could not find her. After her recovery, Patricia Noah gave her blessing for her son to go to America, where his comedy career took off after his appearance on “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno.”

To hear Patricia Noah tell it, Trevor was destined to be a star from day one.

“Trevor was full of energy, full of life, full of jokes. Oh he was so funny, Nomalizo Noah shared with the Daily Mail “He would change that sarcasm of yours and turn it in to a joke and everybody would be laughing the house down, you would be the fool.”

While she thinks he will do well hosting “The Daily Show,”grandmother Noah predicted that her grandson will not stay on the show long.

“I know nothing about comedy, but Trevor is always on the move, looking for different characters, different places,” she said. “I can’t see him staying long.”

Nevertheless, mother Noah is very proud of what her son has accomplished.

“Trevor has caused Africa’s drum to beat again, he has encouraged many to walk on the water and stand on the sea,” she said.
