Moore’s apparent initial comments drew outrage on Twitter, the boxer Lennox Lewis referencing the recent “whitewashing” controversy relating to Ridley Scott’s biblical epic Exodus: Gods and Kings, though he appeared to mix up Christian Bale and co-star Joel Edgerton.

The broadcaster Piers Morgan wrote:

Elba has said in the past that he’s flattered by the groundswell of support he’s received to play Bond (Craig has one more movie after this year’s Spectre on his current Bond contract) but hasn’t publicly commented on this latest controversy.

A few months back Rush Limbaugh said Elba shouldn’t play Bond because he’s Black. Former Sony Pictures head Amy Pascal, though, said in one of the leaked emails from the company’s now infamous hack, said she should absolutely be the next Bond, though with her departure, its unknown how that will play out. Sony is the studio that releases the Bond films.
