Selma director Ava DuVernay delivered a keynote speech at the 2015 SXSW Music, Film + Interactive Festival, where she discussed her Oscar experience when she went the 87th Academy Awards ceremony this year. Although Ava’s film was shut out by the academy’s voting panel for directing and acting, Variety is reporting she admitted when she attended the event, she wasn’t fazed by being there.
According to Ava: “It was a room in L.A. It’s not anything but a big room with very nice people dressed up. It’s very cool. But my work’s worth is not about what happens in, around or for that room.”
That’s a great outlook to have on Hollywood. After Ava’s speech, she took part in a questions and answers segment where she was asked by an audience member why it took such a long time to tell the story of Rev. Martin Luther King Jr’s, march to Selma, Al. Ava didn’t mince any words when she explained Tinsel Town isn’t beating down doors to bring the stories of black leaders to the big screen. Ava’s answer: “The studios aren’t lining up to make films about black protagonists, black people being autonomous and independent.”
