We can only imagine what really happened before Trayvon Martin died, but Melissa Harris-Perry is giving her theory on how she wanted the slain teen to go out.

During a speech titled “We Can’t Breathe: The Continuing Consequences of Inequality,” Mediate reports the MSNBC host mentioned that she hoped Martin, “whooped the sh*t out of George Zimmerman” before his death. Harris’ comments were made Monday (Feb. 23) at Cornell University’s annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Commemorative Lecture.

Martin was 17 and unarmed when he was fatally shot by George Zimmerman in early 2012. Zimmerman went to trial in the case, saying he acted in self-defense. A Florida jury ultimately acquitted him of all charges.

On Tuesday, the Justice Department announced that Zimmerman would not face federal criminal civil rights charges for shooting and killing Marin.

Reacting to Harris-Perry’s comments, Cornell University’s conservative student newspaper, The Cornell Review, labeled them a “shame and an embarrassment” to the school.

The publication uploaded a portion of Harris-Perry’s remarks to YouTube shortly after her speech.
