Authorities are reporting on a shooting on the campus of Bethune-Cookman College Monday night.

WFTV.com reports:

School officials said all the victims suffered superficial graze wounds in the incident, which happened just before 7 p.m.

Officers said the gunman could be a student.

“This could have been a horrible tragedy.  We have six shots from an automatic handgun.  With all these people around you have three graze wounds.  The good Lord was smiling down on campus tonight,” said Daytona Beach Police Chief Mike Chitwood.

One of the victims was taken to the hospital with a graze wound to the shoulder.

A second victim refused treatment; he had a wound on his left ear. He told police he got on the ground as soon as he heard gunfire and a bullet grazed his ear.

The third victim suffered a grazed wound to the knee. He is not cooperating with the investigation, police said.

All the injuries are non-life-threatening.

Police said campus security responded to reports of shots fired immediately and may have prevented a tragedy.

“You know this right here, this is unacceptable. This is a college. This is a lifestyle to education. Shouldn’t be like this,” said student Roderick Dantzler. “This is not street life. Not a jailhouse. This is a place for you to learn.”

Dantzler said he heard an argument and the pop of a gun.

Police interviewed and detained two people who started to run as soon as they heard gunfire.

The two detainees have not been charged and are cooperating with police. They do not appear to be involved, as police originally has thought.

Detectives said they have not located any witnesses and they are still searching for the gunman.

A security officer was the first at the scene after the gunfire broke out, police said.

“One of the guys that was hit was sitting on a step and he was struck,” said Daytona Police Chief Mike Chitwood.

Chitwood said it appears the gunman pulled up next to the music building in a silver car and opened fire.

Police do not yet have a motive for the shooting.

The incident has one community activist calling for an immediate change.

“There are guns on campus. We need a roundup,” said Norma Bland.

Police have not released the names of the victims.
