Q: If fibroids have been detected but aren’t causing any issues, should I still consider having them removed? – L. G.

A: Fibroids are non-cancerous growths of the uterus that often appear during childbearing years. They also may be called leiomyomas or myomas. If your fibroids are not bothering you, then it is not necessary for you to remove them.

They do not increase your risk of uterine cancer, according to WomensHealth.gov, and almost never develop into cancer.

Laproscopic surgery can be done if fibroids are small or require a major surgery depending on the size. Most physicians will not recommend removal unless you are having many symptoms, such as: constipation, backache or leg pains, difficulty emptying your bladder, frequent urination, pelvic pressure or pain, heavy menstrual bleeding and prolonged menstrual periods >7 days.

Since your fibroids aren’t causing any issues, I’d recommend changes to your diet such as limiting red meat and ham, which have been linked to a higher risk of fibroids and increase your intake of green vegetables.
