Black Greek fraternities and sororities are not letting VH1 get away with the airing of their controversial show, Sorority Sisters. Over the weekend, various members of black Greek organizations picketed VH1’s offices to voice their disdain over the freshman series and depiction of black women on the network’s programs. Members came together and braved the cold weather to shine a spotlight on the misguided series’ representation of their frat brothers and sorors along with black women on television. The series chronicles the lives of nine women who are part of four sororities in Atlanta and claims to focus on their attempts to uphold and follow the traditions and standards they set.
Disgruntled watchers started the #BoycottSororitySisters movement on Twitter, after viewers were left outraged by the stereotypical portrays of the historical black Greek sororities. An online petition was also created to compel VH1 to drop the series, picking up over 76,00 signatures urging it to be cancelled. Viewers also lead the charge for companies to snatch their ads from the series and so far over 25 companies have complied.
Despite members of the “Divine Nine” and Black Twitter teaming up to shut Sorority Sisters down, VH1 isn’t about to cry uncle and cut their ties with the show. The network released a statement last week boasting the reality show has nabbed 1.3 million viewers and was the number one non-sports cable program in the key demo of women 18-49.
