LisaRaye is joining the director’s club. She directed her first feature-length film for the Atlanta-based production company Studio 11 Films, according to Indiewire’s Shadow and Act.

Actually, she co-directed “Skinned” with Avery O. Williams, a professor at Morehouse College. He co-wrote the film with producer Clarice Kulah.

“Skinned” tackles the impact of colorism within the black community. Jasmine Burke stars as Jolie, a young woman tormented for her dark skin tone and goes through drastic measures in order to hide her color and hence, her true self.

But as Jolie grows up, gets the man of her dreams and models, she finds out she can’t bear children because of her skin-bleaching creams. She seeks psychiatric help to fight her demons.

Although the film is extremely melodramatic (which can be seen in the trailer below), it tells an important message — a message LisaRaye had to partake in.

She was “determined to speak on behalf of this epidemic with hopes to change lives on a global scale. Young girls that are thinking about bleaching and those that follow the trends of known celebrities who have bleached, she hopes to steer in a different direction.”
