Will Smith will executive produce a small screen version of his film “Hitch’ through a new deal with Fox TV, reports Deadline.com.

The romantic comedy series will be based on the hit 2005 movie which starred Smith as love guru Hitch who ironically becomes a fumbling mess when around the woman he has a major crush on, played by Eva Mendes. The TV version will feature 30-minute episodes and is being pitched as “a workplace comedy that explores dating and sexual politics.”

The green light is a triumph for Sony, Smith and his Overbrook Entertainment production company as they have been trying to get the film to TV for several years, first in 2007 when they attempted to strike a deal with CBS, before trying again with Fox in 2010. Four years later, the deal has finally been made.

The film grossed $370 million at the box office when it was released nearly a decade ago. No word yet on casting.

“Hitch” now joins a growing list of famous box office hits that are getting reboots or spin-offs for TV, with “Marley & Me,” “Monster-In-Law,” “Minority Report,” “Rush Hour,” “Big” and “The Illusionist” among those that are heading to the small screen.
