Shonda Rhimes is on top, again. The Hollywood Reporter cover girl has another success on her hands with How To Get Away With Murder, which was just picked up for a full-season after its first three episodes aired.
The show set a DVR delayed viewing record its first week out and is part of the Shonda-block on Thursday nights with Greys Anatomy, Scandal and HTGAWM, an extraordinary achievement for any showrunner, much less an African-American one.
Though Black, Latino and Asian showrunners are rare (only four African-Americans including Mara Brock Akil and Salim Akil of Being Mary Jane and Tyler Perry made THR’s Top 50 Showrunners list) ABC has two of them.
Showrunner/creator Larry Whitmore’s ‘Black-ish’ starring Anthony Anderson, Tracee Ellis Ross and Larry Fishburne has also been picked up for a full-season order. Despite some sniping from social media, it’s been a strong lead-in for ABC’s flagship comedy hit Modern Family.
