Police ended the brief pursuit with their own gunfire, killing Jackson, Magee and another inmate. According to an account of a Black Panther member, Jackson intended to find a radio station to take over and broadcast the inmate situation at San Quentin and Soledad

The weapons Jackson used in the kidnapping were registered to activist and professor Angela Davis. Davis worked in support of the Soledad Brothers Defense Committee with other notables such as Julian Bond. After the incident, Davis fled California, but was caught two months later in New York.

These are the events that led up to enormous national and international support for Davis, as documented in the 2012 documentary Free Angela Davis and All Political Prisoners directed by Shola Lynch.

A 1972 trial cleared Davis of any connection to the conspiracy. Now 70, Davis has enjoyed a lengthy career as an educator, prolific author, and activist.
