LOS ANGELES (AP) — Universal Pictures and the filmmakers behind the planned N.W.A. biopic are distancing themselves from an offensive casting announcement for the film after social media outrage.

The company said in a statement late Thursday that “the filmmakers … did not approve and do not condone the information in this casting notice. We regret and sincerely apologize for being in any way associated with the offensive descriptions it contained.”

F. Gary Gray is directing the biopic, which stars newcomers and Ice Cube’s son, playing his father in the film. It details the rise of N.W.A, the first major, groundbreaking group to emerge out of the Los Angeles hip-hop scene.

Sande Alessi Casting posted an open call earlier this week that sought women in four categories:

SAG OR NON UNION CASTING NOTICE FOR FEMALES-ALL ETHNICITIES- from the late 80′s. Shoots on “Straight Outta Compton”. Shoot date TBD. We are pulling photos for the director of featured extras. VERY IMPORTANT – You MUST live in the Los Angeles area (Orange County is fine too) to work on this show. DO NOT SUBMIT if you live out of the area. Nobody is going to be flying into LA to do extra work on this show – and don’t tell me you are willing to fly in.

SAG OR NON UNION FEMALES – PLEASE SEE BELOW FOR SPECIFIC BREAKDOWN. DO NOT EMAIL IN FOR MORE THAN ONE CATEGORY:

A GIRLS: These are the hottest of the hottest. Models. MUST have real hair – no extensions, very classy looking, great bodies. You can be black, white, asian, hispanic, mid eastern, or mixed race too. Age 18-30.

B GIRLS: These are fine girls, long natural hair, really nice bodies. Small waists, nice hips. You should be light-skinned. Beyonce is a prototype here. Age 18-30.

C GIRLS: These are African American girls, medium to light skinned with a weave. Age 18-30.

D GIRLS: These are African American girls. Poor, not in good shape. Medium to dark skin tone. Character types. Age 18-30.

Gawker.com quoted the casting call in an article Thursday. The casting company has since removed the announcement from its Facebook page.

A woman who answered the phone at Sande Alessi Casting on Thursday declined comment and would not identify herself.

Universal has not said if it is still working with the casting company. The Sande Alessi Casting website shows it is still inviting African-American men and women to audition as extras for “Straight Outta Compton” at an open call later this month.

  1. It’s clear that African Americans have been fed a steady diet of white racism for–in the US–350 years of slavery and 100 years of Jim Crow and continuing. What is that diet? Well, part of it says that white/European beauty is the standard–stringy hair, pale skin, pointy noses and thin lips. Accordingly, strong hair/tightly coiled hair/nappy hair, dark skin, broad noses and full lips–which is what African Americans and other black people tend to have world wide is inferior! And the features are given extra “good” names. For example, their stringy hair is called “silky” and their pale skin is called “fair” and their pointy noses are sometimes called “aquiline”. It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure out what’s going on. In fact we swim in a river of white racism morning, noon and night in the culture and media of America–newspapers, Internet, radio, TV, etc.

No wonder we have African Americans calling each other the N word so taking part in their own denigration and oppression. We have African Americans making fun of someone who has tightly coiled/strong/nappy hair! We have African Americans making fun of and denigrating someone who has dark skin! We have making fun of and denigrating someone who has a broad nose. (“His nose is so wide!”) And we have African Americans making fun of and denigrating someone who has full lips. (“His lips are so big!”) White is the standard. Deviate from that standard and you are worth less. (Or is it “worthless” a la Trayvon Martin, Emmitt Till and countless others?)
No wonder the richer the African American man, the more likely he is to date and marry other than a black (African American or otherwise) woman. After all, he’s rich. He can afford the best house, the best car, the best wine and he naturally wants the best woman to go along with that (and as added benefit produce “better” (read less black, less African) children) and such a woman doesn’t have nappy hair, thick lips, dark skin and a wide nose. That woman is ugly. They want a “beautiful” woman thathas silky hair, thinner lips, fair skin and an aquiline/European nose. So sick, so self-hating and so racist!

For example (and the examples are many for sometimes it appears that an other than black girlfriend or fiancé seems to come with the NBA, NFL or Hollywood contract), DeSean Jackson, the African American NFL player is said to have posted online a picture of himself with a mixed, mulatto or biracial little girl with light/blue/green/hazel eyes with the comment (paraphrased) “This is the most beautiful girl ever! . . . My daughter’s eyes need to look like this.”—referring to his future child that apparently has yet to be conceived or a mother found for. He is said to have a dark skinned daughter by a prior relationship and is said to have said about her “My daughter is the first and last dark child I’m having.” (See http://insidejamarifox.com/desean-jackson-expects-something-clear-after-he-sticks-it-in/#more-37318 ) Let’s be frank about such people—DeSean Jackson and the people who put together such casting calls and such people as Little Wayne the rapper who is said to hold such sentiments. And such sentiments are expressed in such casting calls and in music videos and movies frequently. It doesn’t take a keen observer to notice that the desirable women in the music videos done with African American male singers and rappers are usually of the “light, bright and nearly white” or white or mixed, mulatto or biracial variety as are the desirable women matched with African American men as love interests in movies! Dark women are deemed to be “less than”. They are anti-black racists. DeSean Jackson seems to be an anti-black racist. But ain’t that cooning!

      • I use to listen nwa at first but once I could tell the difference between nwa and Public Enemy I knew it was time to give them up completely. Then last big lp as a group was one of the most self destructive
n word hating lp I had ever listen. I just shook my head hearing this audio madness.
Now,today depending on what black urban community you might live in or pass thru.
We can see the seeds of self destruction, black on black violence and exploitation bear it’s sinister fruit in the 21st century. I will make sure to never watch this twisted story

All this casting call does is show the contempt that Dr. Dre and Ice Cube have for their own people. I find it hard to believe that as producers of the movie Ice Cube and Dr. Dre did not see the descriptions or have direct input on what they were looking for in the A, B, C and D categories. The fact that they were okay with the wording says more about Ice Cube and Dr. Dre than it does about the casting agency. Dr. Dre and Ice Cube don’t even care that they are offending their core audience for the movie. The sad part is that some blacks will still support this movie and will continue to support them in their future projects. It’s going to be interesting when they go to the radio stations to promote this movie. I know they will be questioned on the casting call for the movie.

any interest at all I would have had in seeing this movie is completely gone, For Good! Whoever dreamed this up is a total idiot. That having been said, lets not paint all black men with such a wide briad brush. Their are many, many, many ( and even many more) black men who love and respect their women more than those fools may indicate. No, black men do not all hate their mothers, nor was this sterotype created by them either. Barak Obama isnt the only one who loves his wife either, most of us do too. While the anger is justified, slinging insults and hurling accusations and lumping people all into the same category is just as bad. In fact, it is what the enemy wants us to do. Their will always be some no account brothers ( as their are in all races)So I agree with you all about this movie, but the generalizing of black men, no I do not. I cannot jump on the bandwagon of hate.

This is so typical of the ignorant black man!! If you want to destroy or dominate a people, you start with the male first!!! This has been proven throughout history! Need I say more???

ignorance and self hate, but what do you expect from NWA. Their misogynistic lyrics contributed to the culture of hate between black women and men. I will not support this ignorance with my dollars.
