We admit we weren’t all that excited about a James Brown movie…at first. But a glimpse at the almost 3 minute trailer for Get On Up has surely changed our mind. We thought we knew a little something about the Godfather of Soul’s life, but we didn’t know it was going to come off like a combination of The Five Heartbeats mixed with The Temptations and a little Dreamgirls thrown in, all to a James Brown soundtrack. It’s hard to go wrong with that.

Chadwick Boseman, an unknown a year ago, has apparently found his niche as The Biopic Brother, because this is his second movie in a row playing a real-life figure. Not that you can go wrong with Jackie Robinson and James Brown in your first two big movies.

The movie doesn’t lack for big stars, either. Viola Davis, Jill Scott and Octavia Spencer play James’s mother, one of his wives and his Aunt Honey, respectively. True Blood’s Nelsen Ellis (Lafayette) plays Brown’s manager Bobby Byrd, Craig Robinson (Peeples) plays the legendary Maceo Parker and Ralph Tresvant makes a cameo as Sam Cooke. Spike Lee was originally tapped to direct, but the movie ultimately went to Tate Taylor of The Help fame.

Get On Up is set to be released in August. What do you think of the trailer?
