DETROIT (AP) — Detroit police say a bus driver is hospitalized after a man threw a liquid believed to be bleach in his face.

Officer Adam Madera tells The Associated Press the driver was attacked after pulling up Sunday at a stop near the former state fairgrounds along Woodward Avenue, the city’s main north-south thoroughfare. The man who tossed the liquid fled on foot.

Madera says the driver was hospitalized in stable condition. It’s not clear what led to the attack.

WDIV-TV video showed liquid spattered inside the front of the bus.

The attack comes amid ongoing concerns about bus driver safety in Detroit. Last month, a drivers’ protest over safety issues halted Detroit Department of Transportation operations for a day. Police have said they would step up efforts to keep buses safer.
