Recently Fox news host, Lauren Ingraham came out on her show attacking NBA player Lebron James for speaking out about politics in our government. She called on James to be quiet and keep dribbling because he’s just an athlete. During the NBA All-Star weekend, James hit back not taking any of what Ingraham had to say.

American sports journalist and professor at University of Maryland Kevin Blackistone talks with Roland Martin about the role of athletes in activism.

“It was also completely disingenuous of her,” explained Blackistone. “When there’s an audacity of melanin in the public sphere then people like Lauren Ingraham are going to try an exercise the ultimate in White privilege and tell Black folks how they should behave.”

Sports have a huge sphere of influence with the ability to use that platform to raise awareness on various issues.

“It is so large and such a part of the media that no one can not pay attention to it. When someone does use sports as a back drop for protest it can certainly turn people off but the interesting thing is that it can gain support,” explained Blackistone.
