Recently, three Black women were racially profiled and accused of stealing from a home in Rialto, California when they were checking out of their AirB&B. Why? Because they didn’t waive back at a white woman who waved at them which prompted her to call the cops.
Jacque Reid goes Inside Her Story with Kelly Marshall and Donisha Prendergast the granddaughter of Bob Marley.
“They rolled up all quiet no sirens blaring,” explained Pendergast. “At the beginning there were about seven cars three of which left. They created almost like a barricade around us.”
Marshall recalls the conversations they had with the officers and having to explain to them that they were only guests.
“He came over and he said well why did you believe them? We had to start again,” explained Marshall. “We had to show him our reservations on the phone, we had to call the landlord on the phone, and explain what Air B&B is again.”
When officers asked them to put their hands up, Prendergast refused. “I told him no, I am not going to put my hands up,” she expressed. “For me it was about controlling the situation from the jump before it spinned off into something else.”
“White Privilege met Black Privilege that day,” said Prendergast.
