John Conyers III the son of former Rep. John Conyers set to replace his father was arrested earlier this year in Los Angeles on, “suspicion of domestic violence” according to NBC news.

A “lack of independent witnesses” is what the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office came to in the case saying that, “it could not be proven beyond reasonable doubt that the victim’s injury was not accidentally sustained” when Conyers was trying to disarm his then-girlfriend.

According to prosecutors, the victim didn’t show any signs of injuries other than a “small stab wound to a lower biceps and no other independent witnesses” to her description of Conyers pushing and shoving her.

On February 15, 2017, the 27-year-old was arrested in Los Angeles on the suspicion of violence against his girlfriend after she called the police. In a document outlining a decision to not file charges, the girlfriend’s name is not listed.

In an interview with The New York Times Conyers explained that during the course of an argument between the two, she reached for a knife and that she inflicted the wound on herself. “I apologize, and I am regretful for any part I played in escalating the altercation,” said Conyers.

Conyers was arrested and then released on a $50,000 bond the same day.

He told The New York Times, “all criminal charges were dismissed and a restraining order was entered as a cooling-off measure.” He continued, “The authorities did not see any need to proceed further.”

With this in the mix after his father, John Conyers announced he’d be stepping down and not seeking re-election because of multiple sex allegations many may wonder whether or not Conyers III is capable of taking over.
