A 20-year-old man headed to court for sentencing on Thursday, October 5, 2017. He pleaded guilty to murder charges after shooting and killing a 17-year-old during an arranged meeting to sell Air Jordans.

Dante Tyrell Ford pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and felony firearm violations in September according to Click On Detroit.

Ford shot and killed Corey Harris-Thomas and injured another man sitting inside a car on the west side of Detroit.

“Every day when I wake up, I go to his room. I haven’t changed it,” said Harris’ mom. “Not being able to open the door and tell him to get up so he can go to school because he wouldn’t wake up on his own, which is typical, it breaks my heart.”

Ford had nothing to say but the judge presiding over the case did. “You took the life of someone almost the same age as you and over what? A pair of Air Jordan Nikes. Mr. Ford knew what he was doing was wrong.”

On June 6, 2017, Harris-Thomas and his 24-year-old friend met with Ford at about 1:30 pm for an arranged meeting by Harris-Thomas to exchange the shoes.

Ford jumped into the back of Harris’ SUV and drove two blocks down before police said that Ford allegedly fired a gun hitting the 24-year-old and then fired another shot killing Harris-Thomas.

Sustaining a gun wound, Ford ran from the scene. The 24-year-old was able to call the police who arrived at 1:43 pm to find Harris-Thomas dead at the scene.

Dante Ford was sentenced to 28-30 years in prison.
