Police Detective at Crime Scene

Unfortunately, this staggering number is true for the city of Chicago this year.

As of September 18, 2017, following a deadly weekend the city head in which 10 people were killed and 31 injured, they recorded 500 homicides.

According to the Chicago Tribune, 24-year-old Juan Bahena Jr. was the 500 homicide. On Sunday, September 17, 2017, Bahena was sitting in his car when a tan van drove by unleashing bullets on his car.

The bullets struck him in the neck, thigh, and buttocks, he was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Chicago Tribune records and keeps data of all homicide deaths in the city. Although nothing compared to last year, when they reached this number by the end of August, data shows that homicides are down by 7 percent.

At midnight on Saturday, September 16, 2017, officers recorded 486 murders for the year while last year around this team they had well exceeded that number with 521 murders.

Bahena was 1 of 2, 718 people shot in Chicago this year which is an 11% decrease from the 3,066 last year at this time.

Ray a 27-year-old father who just moved back to the neighborhood said, “This is the first time I’ve seen something like this since I’ve been back.” He explained that he expected this kind of violence regardless of the weather getting cooler because, “it’s never over.”
