Grammy award-winning singer Mariah Carey has expressed that she suffers from, “low self-esteem.”

Many super stars suffered from low self-esteem even though they mean the world to their fans. As a child tennis champion, Serena Williams suffered from self-esteem issues as she was always in her sister’s shadow. The iconic Oprah Winfrey suffered from self-esteem issues as well from a young age after being raped and abused. It would seem that there’s a sometimes harsh price to pay to be famous.

In an interview with Page Six, Carey expressed her feelings about her self-esteem, saying, ” I just feel like I am a regular human being and I deserve the same respect as anybody else. I have always had low self-esteem, and people do not recognize that.”

Social media and the people you may surround yourself by has a huge effect on self-esteem and can often cause people to go into a dark place. On that Carey says, “I do think to myself, ‘Did they mean this? Or do they not really mean it?’ And that is with everybody — it is not just with three people or just one.”

Carey explains how being biracial and not knowing where she fits in contributed to her low self-esteem. However, she says, “music became such a big part of my life because it helped me overcome those issues.”

Starting out in the music industry was tough for Carey. She remembers, “making demos in the middle of the night, sleeping on the floor in the studio, being broke with no food.”
