Civil rights activist Dick Gregory, who is known for his activism during the Civil Rights Movement and Vietnam War, has died at the age of 84.

Gregory died August 19, 2017,  a post on his Instagram made by his son states that the comedian and activist died in Washington D.C.

Gregory was taken to the hospital after feeling sick on Wednesday, August 9, 2017. He was evaluated, treated and then released. However, on Saturday, August 12, 2017, the 85-year-old showed little signs of improvement and was readmitted to the hospital.

At this time, the family now ask for, “privacy as they grieve during this very difficult time.”
