Last month, on the 61st anniversary of the launch of the Montgomery Bus Boycott, we launched Phase 1 of what we are calling the Injustice Boycott. Over 300,000 people from all 50 states and over 40 countries have signed on to say that they are ready to put their money where their mouth is on issues of injustice in this country.

And for the past 45 days, in this first phase, we’ve labored to educate and inform the nation on the severities of injustice, police brutality and mass incarceration in some of the nation’s most progressive cities. Phase 1 of our plan ends on this coming Monday, January 16th, which is King Day across the country.

And on the following day, which is Tuesday January 17th, we are going to move from awareness to action.

Starting in New York, San Francisco, and Standing Rock – we will be announcing plans for targeted nationwide boycotts in those cities, if the elected officials, corporate leaders, and policy makers in those cities do not take our very reasonable demands seriously.

Earlier this morning, on Facebook and Twitter, I shared a very important graphic that I want you all to see. It’s a map of the United States.

On the map, it shows all of the states where Democrats currently run the state with a Democratic Governor and a Democratic legislature.

Guess how many states Democrats run right now?

Not half.

Not 20.

Not 10.

Not even 5.

As it stands right now, Democrats control just 4 states in the entire country – and they are California, Oregon, Hawaii, and Rhode Island. That’s it. If you want anything passed in the other 46 states, you have to go through Republicans.

What that basically means is that in those 46 states, it is all but guaranteed that we are not going to see serious, substantive reforms on police brutality, racial discrimination, and mass incarceration.

As you know, Republicans also control the United States Senate, the House of Representatives, and are about to control the White House.

Are you hearing what I’m saying?

What we’re seeing right now is the fact that President Obama has been holding the Democratic Party together by a thread. The influence of Democrats from coast to coast has been decimated and Republicans are about to run us over on many issues that matter most to us.

Just last night, well actually earlier this morning, at 1:30AM in the morning, Senate Republicans, who now run the show, passed their first vote to begin repealing Obamacare.

That’s where we are right now. This is our new reality.

And please hear my heart. We should protest this. We should march. We should tweet and Facebook and sign petitions. I’m all for those things, but I promise you that Republicans will hardly be moved by our efforts.
