Ahead of its Christmas Day release nationwide, Paramount Pictures has released the first trailer for Denzel Washington’s “Fences,” based on August Wilson’s 1987 play.

The trailer sees Washington as Pittsburgh garbage collector Troy Maxson – the lead role that won him a Tony Award in 2010 – launching into the memorable “How come you ain’t never liked me?” scene with Jovan Adepo, who plays Troy’s son, Cory.

As Troy’s answer to his son crescendos, scenes from the rest of the film appear until it all comes to a screeching halt with an emotional outburst from Viola Davis as Troy’s wife, Rose.

The film is set for wide release on December 25 following a New York/Los Angeles limited run on Dec. 16.

Wilson won a Pulitzer Prize for Fences in 1987, and the Broadway production went on to win Tonys for best play, best leading actor (James Earl Jones), best featured actress (Mary Alice) and best direction (Lloyd Richards). The 2010 revival won best revival of a play, best leading actor (Washington) and best leading actress (Davis).

The film adaptation is produced by Scott Rudin, with Stephen McKinley Henderson reprising his Tony-nominated role and Mykelti Williamson back as well.
