We have sad news to report about Marion Christopher Barry. He’s the son of the late Washington D.C. mayor and councilman Marion Barry and a former candidate for political office in the District. He died of an apparent drug overdose, according to the Washington Post.

Barry, 36, was found by his girlfriend and was taken to George Washington University Hospital where he was pronounced dead. He was known in the area of Southeast D.C. as a community advocate and had owned a construction firm, Efficiency Contractors LLC.

The older Barry died in 2014, leaving a vacancy in the D.C. Ward 8 council seat and his son ran for the position the next year in a special election, but lost that race. Trayon White, the 2016 Democratic nominee for the full four-year term, called Barry “a friend” who cared about the community he was serving.

“Chris was like a brother to me. He cared about the community. He had a lot of things that he wanted to work on to better the community,” White told the Post.“Chris is going to be missed by me and others who knew him.”

Marion C. Barry had struggled with drug addiction and had run-ins with the law in the past. In 2015, he pleaded guilty after he was arrested for an outbreak at a bank branch after trying to withdraw money from an overdrawn account, according to WTOP-TV. He had also faced DUI and drug possession charges in 2013 and 2011.
